Computer architecture is the conceptual design and fundamental operational structure of a computer system. It describes how hardware components are organized, how they communicate, and how they execute instructions to perform computation. The term is often used interchangeably with "computer organization," though scholars typically draw a distinction: architecture refers to the attributes visible to a programmer—the instruction set, addressing modes, data types—while organization refers to the operational units and their interconnections that implement those architectural specifications—control signals, memory technology, peripheral interfaces.

A useful analogy is architecture in the building sense: two houses can share the same blueprint (architecture) but be constructed with different materials and techniques (organization). Similarly, two processors can implement the same instruction set architecture (ISA) while differing substantially in their internal circuitry and performance characteristics. <ref>
